Was Kevin Smith High When He Conceived and Directed 'Tusk'?

In Dustin’s “I’m not angry with you, I’m just disappointed” review of Kevin Smith’s horror film Tusk, he made the comment that Smith was undoubtedly high when the concept was conceived. Not that there’s anything inherently wrong with that, you see, but it may explain some of the problems in the film itself. If he were high while writing and directing, that is.

Turns out, he totally was.

On one of my very favorite podcasts to listen to at work (it’s very calming to listen to, shut yer yap!), “Getting Doug with High”, Smith discussed Tusk with Doug Benson and Brian Posehn. If you have never seen nor heard of this video podcast, Benson has his celebrity pals come on the show to smoke up, discuss pot topics, and generally have a great time while I’m not. It’s a glorious thing and you should all watch and/or listen to it.

Smith was on the show and was his normal talkative self. When asked if he was high when creating and then directing the flick, Smith replied, “The movie? Absolutely. Of course. It was born in a blaze. It would be irresponsible to be like ‘I can’t be smoking weed while we’re makin’ this walrus movie!”. (Skip to 13:13 to get right to the discussion. Or watch the whole thing for Posehn’s story about Margaret Cho being annoying and even more Smith talking.)
