Morning Briefing: Trump Names FBI Director, and Eric Trump Is an Angry, Angry Man

— Christopher Wray is Donald Trump’s pick to head the FBI. There’s no real dirt on him. He seems like a decent pick. He was the assistant attorney general in the criminal division under George Bush. He’s been a private lawyer specializing in white-collar crime and internal investigations since 2005. He did defend Chris Christie in Bridgegate, but everyone deserves a lawyer (at least, everyone who doesn’t undercut, refuse to listen, or fail to pay their lawyer).

Norm Eisen says he’s a good choice, and Haberman says Norm Eisen knows his stuff (Eisen is a Trump critic), so I have no beef with the choice.

This guy is former DOJ and an MSNBC legal analyst, and he’s good with the pick, too.

Trump made the announcement on Twitter. There’s some question about whether the White House even knew he’d make the announcement, as there was no formal roll-out prepared. One gets the feeling that Trump was just trying to hastily change the subject.

— A new Washington Post-ABC News poll is out this morning, and it shows that the majority of Americans believe that Trump is trying to interfere with the Russian election, and that he fired James Comey to protect himself.

The numbers on James Comey, however, are not exactly great, either. Fifty-five percent of respondents trust Comey “only some” or “not at all,” despite the fact that three senior FBI official can corroborate James Comey’s accounts.

— In mid-terms news, Nate Silver has a new poll out showing that “generic” Democrats have a very strong lead over “generic” Republicans at this stage in the generic race.

Silver also adds that, barring a major event like 9/11, polls like these — even 18 months out — are historically fairly predictive of the outcomes in the midterms.

— Democrats may hold the lead going into next year’s midterms, but according to Eric Trump, Democrats “aren’t even people.” He was on Hannity last night, and dude is an angry, angry man.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Assholes beget assholes.

— Speaking of the midterms, the Dems can gain a lot of momentum if Jon Ossoff can defeat his Republican opponent in Georgia’s special election on June 20th. The latest polls give a slight advantage to Ossoff in a red district, and last night, his opponent Karen Handler said, out loud, that she does not support a “livable wage.” Regardless of the politics or the context, it’s a very bad sound bite.

“I do not support a livable wage.”
