A lot of the time the internet sucks, but now and then, there are beautiful glimmers of light that give us hope.

Oliver Thorn, better known as the man behind the YouTube series Philosophy Tube, is an actor and philosopher who creates fascinating deep dives into various thought exercises, political issues, and controversial figures who are dishearteningly shaping our times. Much like fellow left-wing YouTubers ContraPoints and H.Bomberguy, Thorn’s work includes long-form think-pieces, sketch comedy, detailed production design, and plenty of laughs. For a good idea of his work, check out his video on Elon Musk.

Recently, Thorn released what may be his most startlingly emotional and ambitious video yet. ‘Men. Abuse. Trauma’ is a 35-minute piece with no cuts or edits and none of Thorn’s usual dramatics. Rather, it is a monologue (one he memorized!) that uses the Jean-Paul Sartre play No Exit as a means to discuss his own trauma and mental health struggles. Take time out from your day to watch it and I promise you won’t regret it.

Thorn ended his video by announcing that he planned to raise money for charity with an equally ambitious undertaking: A live-reading of the entire collected works of William Shakespeare. It’s currently happening on Twitch and has less than a day to go. Thorne has been joined by a number of fellow YouTubers for some fun, silly, awkward, and delightfully unrehearsed performances. So far, he’s raised over $88,000 for the Samaritans. You can watch it (and donate) here!

Eagle-eyed fans will notice his Beaver Bother t-shirt, a reference to H.Bomberguy’s now-legendary Donkey Kong 64 live-stream which helped to raise over $340,000 for the trans youth support charity Mermaids, after transphobic bully Graham Linehan tried to have them stripped of their National Lottery funding.

Go support Thorn’s work, get cultured, and raise money for a good cause!
