This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things: Mildly Annoying Ad Provokes Outcry of Reverse Racism

When I initially heard that DirectTV had pulled an ad from YouTube after the comments section for the ad devolved into a race war with outcries of reverse racism and elder abuse, I expected at least something provocative in the ad (below). I watched it twice before I even recognized what was even at issue. In the ad, a fictional boxer named Tommy “The Truth” Thompson is walking with his African-American entourage and explaining the wonders of DirectTV. Near the end of the ad, Tommy’s son, “Half Truth” sucker punches the white butler.

That’s it? That’s all there is to it? How could anyone find this racist?

And then I remember what we’re dealing with: YouTube commenters, the sewer-dwelling mouthbreathers of the Internet, the only idiots on the planet who might interpret the benign ad as advocating elder abuse or suggesting reverse racism. Commenters started calling for a bocyott of DirectTV because a black kid punched a white butler in a banal tongue-in-cheek ad? Really. But wait, it’s not just reverse racist; it’s also apparently straight-up racist because it reinforces stereotypes about black people, namely that their children sucker punch their butlers, which we all know to be true.

Why DirectTV would bow the pressure of troglodytes with keyboards is an open question. Seriously, the people in Idiocracy look at YouTube comments and worry about the future of the nation. That’s how perversely moronic they are. Most of them turned on their caps lock in 2004, ripped the key off with their one tooth, and have since been YELLING INTO THEIR COMPUTERS. When we let these people control this discourse, that’s when the level of stupidity begins to counterbalance the laws of gravity and the planet skitters into the sun.
