It’s been a little while since I indulged in my deepfake obsession. The machine learning and AI-based technology that replaces one person’s face with another is getting better and better, and making the once hypothetical scenario of video sources becoming yet another fountain of misinformation rather than a tool of verification a reality. Deepfakes have a significant potential for sinister purpose, already being used in ways linked to abuse, fake news, fraud, explicit misogynist revenge material, and smearing activists to name just a few. It’s partly because of the inherent danger of the technology, I think, that I remain so fascinated by it. ‘Know your enemy,’ and all that. If we keep an eye on this tech’s development, we’ll be more ready to spot its use in the wild. After all, knowledge is power. And the deepfakes are getting scarily good.
