The Mystery Of The Upstairs Tenant Is Solved, Less Scary Than We Hoped
Earlier this week, our own Bekka Supp tipped us off to a truly strange real estate listing that included an unseeable upstairs with an unpaying, unmovable enigma as a tenant. Our collective imaginations went wild, imagining everything from menacing ghosts and creepy killer, to bodies and flowers in the attic.
Some scraps of internet info suggested the answer was simpler and less sinister: a local artist lived there. And now, a local news team has sought him out to see what he makes of becoming the subject of much internet fascination.
After hitting hard times financially, Randall McKissick was offered the upstairs apartment in the Cayce, South Carolina, house from a childhood friend. He’s lived there rent-free ever since, and had no idea his residence had gone viral.
The 70-year-old insists he’d be a good neighbor to whoever might take on the fixer-upper. “I’m easy to get along with. I’m upstairs. They would be downstairs. The only thing that would be a problem is my heavy footsteps.”
While the “for sale” sign is still in the yard, the house’s Zillow listing now claims it’s off the market. No details on whether the internet attention helped sell it, or if the owners have had a change of heart. Either way, McKissick doesn’t seem bothered.
