The Dictionary’s Guide to Trump

We never thought that Merriam-Webster’s Twitter account would be leading the resistance, huh?

Well, it turns out there are plenty of other dictionary-related gems, just waiting to brighten up your day. They explain a lot.

Trump (verb) — to deceive, to allege, to concoct and put forward unscrupulously, to trumpet
Trumped-up (adjective) — unsubstantiated and exaggerated
Trump (noun) — an obstruction cast in one’s way
Trumpery (noun) — showy and worthless stuff

E.g. Trump’s trumpery consists of trumped-up allegations about the press. He has trumped his way to office, and has become a trump for liberal-minded Americans.

But language changes, as we know, so I’d like to take this opportunity to share some new little word-play treats of my own creation.

Trumpish / Trumpian (adjective) — describing typical Donald behaviour
Trumpism (noun) — Donald’s typical linguistic patterns
Trumptastic (adjective) — describing an extreme form of typical Donald behaviour
Trumpette (noun) — a pro-Trump woman
Moral Trumpitude (noun) — moral turpitude exists already of course, as “an act or behaviour that gravely violates the sentiment or accepted standard of the community”, but Donald really deserves his own particular brand.
Trumpectomy (noun) — I’m going to offer this now as the official word to use for his inevitable removal from office. You know, when Trump gets dumped …

E.g. Trump’s speeches are always on the trumpish side, being full of trumpisms, but last night’s press conference was trumptastic. He made his trumpette, Kellyanne Conway, look positively eloquent. Surely, he has committed moral trumpitude now? I’m looking forward to the trumpectomy.

A few more? How about these:

Strumpet (noun) — bit of Shakespeare, anyone? I’m not really a fan of language that exclusively judges female sexual behaviour, but might there be a case for reclaiming this one? Purely for the sake of punning?
Chump (noun) — a foolish or easily deceived person
Numpty (noun) — always a favourite. Originally Scottish, used to mean a stupid person.

Mr. President, when you declare war on the press, you are messing with writers. Is that really what you want to do? Don’t be a numpty. We hold all the trump-cards, and we’re not afraid to use them.

A confession to finish with — the first time I saw ‘Trump Pence’ on a poster, I thought he had invented his own currency. Sorry about that. It would have been a particularly trumptastic thing to do though.

Can you think of any more? If so, add them in the comments!
