Sophia Loren Finally Explains the Greatest Picture in the History of Side-Eye

Without doubt, the greatest side-eye ever darted has to be from Sophia Loren, targeted at the breasts of Jayne Mansfield. This picture has lived in boob-infamy for the last 57 years, and Loren, now 80, has finally come out with an explanation. Is that explanation an apology? A “the camera caught me at a weird angle” deflection? No. Apparently, that picture is exactly what it looks like.

Paramount had organized a party for me. All of cinema was there, it was incredible. And then comes in Jayne Mansfield, the last one to come. For me, that was when it got amazing.

She came right for my table. She knew everyone was watching. She sat down. And now, she was barely… Listen. Look at the picture. Where are my eyes? I’m staring at her nipples because I am afraid they are about to come onto my plate. In my face you can see the fear. I’m so frightened that everything in her dress is going to blow—BOOM!—and spill all over the table.

The interviewer even tried to cut her some slack, saying there were other pictures from the night where Loren looked nothing but happy. Maybe Mansfield’s dress wasn’t such a big issue? But no. Sophia stands by her side-eye.

No, no. Well, there may be other photos, but this is the picture. This is the one that shows how it was. This is the only picture.
There you have it. A classic moment of Hollywood cleavage-gazing, forever bronzed for eternal snarking.
