Sad news today as Scott Weiland, the former frontman of Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, has died, aged 48.

Weiland’s Facebook page reports that he ‘passed away in his sleep while on a tour stop in Bloomington, Minnesota, with his band The Wildabouts’.

Weiland lead a tumultuous and somewhat tortured life, having been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and struggling with substance abuse for much of his adult life, as well as difficult relationships with most of the bands that he was involved with.

The Stone Temple Pilots were a big deal once upon a time, selling 13.5 million albums in the U.S., before falling victim to that age-old rock ‘n’ roll disease: band infighting.

Velvet Revolver, Weiland’s supergroup team-up with Slash, Matt Sorum, and Duff McKagan, formed in 2002 and sold 2.4 million albums, before Weiland left to re-join Stone Temple Pilots. This, too, however did not last, and Scott Weiland & The Wildabouts proved to be his last musical endeavour before his untimely death.

Weiland is survived by two children.

Friends and fans expressed their sadness on Twitter.

Rest in peace, Scott.
