How The F**k You Doin', HBO Viewers?

One of the more pernicious affects that high school seems to have on culture at large is the idea that everyone has to be categorized. I’m not sure if this arose from popular media telling high schoolers that people fit into neat little easily cast boxes or if it arose from actual high school experiences but I tend to lean towards the latter; teenagers are nothing if not judgmental and insecure so the tendency to assign and dutifully live up to labels is almost all they’re good for. This has carried over into reality television, which conveniently cuts the first few episodes of the season so we can get to see who’s going to be playing The Bitch, The Jock, The Brain, The Geek, etc. So, of the shows on tonight (if you watch any of them) what category do you think the characters fall into and is it the writing or do you think the actor is choosing to play it that way? Here’s Wednesday night’s TV:

8:00pm: “Big Brother” on CBS. Man, this one’s an easy shot because they practically label people “Dumb Ho” or what have you on the title cards when they walk in the house.

“Minute to Win It” on NBC. First season finale.

“So You Think You Can Dance” on Fox

9:00pm: “America’s Got Talent” on NBC

“Confessions: Animal Hoarding” on Animal Planet. This one’s no fun because the answer is almost always going to be “That Kid Who Sat In the Back And Didn’t Talk to Anyone and Was Always Covered in Cat Hair” even though that’s a touch ungainly for a category.

“Dark Blue” on TNT. I think this show exists so that Dylan McDermott could play something other than “Bland Handsome Guy” for once.

“Ghost Hunters International” on SyFy

“Man vs. Food” on Travel. Kansas city is the scene of tonight’s battle.

“Man vs. Wild” on Discovery. Fifth season premiere. Mr.Grylls takes on the Western Pacific tonight. Wonder if he’ll wrestle naked with a bear while telling the viewers this is exactly what they DON’T want to do, should they find themselves in a similar situation as the camera men make bets on the outcome off screen.

“Plain Jane” on The CW

“Top Chef” on Bravo

“Wonders of the Solar System” on Science

9:30pm: “Dog the Bounty Hunter” on A&E. Sixth season finale.

10:00pm: “24 Hour Restaurant Battle” on Food Network

“Bert the Conquerer” on Travel. First season finale. South Carolina will be conquered tonight.

“Chasing Mummies” on History

“The Choir” on BBCA

“Criss Angel” on A&E

“Hard Knocks” on HBO. Sixth season premiere. If you’re planning to watch this, you should read this first. (WARNING: Language NSFW. Also, those of you with weak stomachs may want to steer clear.) Seriously, there’s no way the actual Rex Ryan can ever live up to his internet persona. Actually, I’d be more scared if he did.

“Hot in Cleveland” on TV Land

“LA Ink” on TLC. Fourth season premiere.

“Monsters Inside Me” on Animal Planet

“Pros vs. Joes” on Spike TV

“Psych” on USA

“The Real World” on MTV. Another easy shot on the categorization challenge. Although I’m not sure if anyone over 12 actually watches this anymore.

“Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns” on TBS

“Work of Art: The Next Great Artist” on Bravo. First season finale.

Late Night Listings

“The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” on NBC featuring Jason Statham, 92 Year Old Car Lady Rachel Veitch (I swear to God, that is actually what it says), and Los Lobos

“Jimmy Kimmel Live” on ABC featuring Jason Schwartzman, Reed Alexander, and Joanna Newsom

“The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” on CBS featuring Maggie Gyllenhaal, Betty White, and Julie Gribble

“Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” on NBC featuring Michael Cera, Landon Donovan, and JP, Chrissie, and The Fairground Boys

“The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” on Comedy Central featuring Laura Linney

“The Colbert Report” on Comedy Central featuring David Finkel
