Oh, So THIS Is Why Everyone's Been Talking About Mindy Kaling and BJ Novak Lately

The celebrity gossip machine is generally thought of as an invasive over-investment in strangers’ lives. And while that’s definitely often true (except the way Pajiba does it, obviously; we are delightful and respectful and basically just great), it’s also a bit naive to place celebrities squarely in the role of helpless victim. The truth is, they f*cking play us. When you see a Justin Bieber headline every day for two weeks, it’s not because he’s actually doing interesting things (obviously) or that we’re suddenly super interested in him as a person (double obviously). It’s because his PR team is working hard to promote some project or a manufactured image rehabilitation.

Cut to last week, when Mindy Kaling was dominating headlines when she talked to People magazine about her “weird as hell” relationship with B.J. Novak.

I will freely admit: My relationship with B.J. Novak is weird as hell. He is not my boyfriend, but he is not my best friend. I guess you could describe our relationship as a ‘romantically charged camaraderie with loud arguments,’ but I don’t think Facebook would accept this as a new status.
Did we enjoy reading about these adorable soup snakes? Of course! Were the comments the candid revelations of a woman who wants to be our friend? No, silly. Turns out, she was shopping a book.

It hasn’t been confirmed, by according to the New York Daily News, Kaling and Novak are writing a book together about their off-and-on relationship.

We’re told the book is likely to include juicy information about “The Office” stars’ “complicated” courtship, which coincided with their roles on the NBC comedy, which ran from 2005-13.

Kaling and Novak have been pretty quiet about their relationship until now. Last September, Kaling opened up about things on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM show, saying her co-star had broken her heart a decade ago, when she was only 24. She also confessed she might have married him then.

At about the same time, Novak talked to People magazine about Kaling and their relationship: “A really complicated person and a really complicated friendship, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world,” he said.

No doubt all of those headlines borne from one single pull quote proved there was interest in the book, and they hopefully helped Kaling and Novak get the absolutely insane rumored paycheck of $7.5 million.
