New Zealanders Build Island to Avoid Alcohol Ban

You know the score: You’re thirsty. You’re in a public place, and you’re thirsty. You’ve had a long day, you’re thirsty, and the only thing that’ll really hit the spot is a good beer or six. The only problem is you just happen to want to drink on the beach, and The Man has said that you are not allowed to drink there. So they’ve left you no choice. Now you’ll just have to literally build an island to circumvent public drinking laws.

I mean, we’ve all been there right?

Or at least that’s what happened over New Year’s Eve in New Zealand. There, in a town called Tairua, a number of locals were seen on the afternoon of New Year’s Eve. Out in the bay at low tide, they kept busy, building a large structure out of sand. Once finished, they added a picnic table and a chill box.

Then the tide came in, they cracked open the beers, and they could still be seen out there, drinking and watching the fireworks well into the night.

The group was reportedly not worried about arrest as they considered themselves to be, ‘in international waters.’

The police, however, soon came down hard on the revelers. According to a local Kiwi site reporting on the issue:

Waikato eastern area commander Inspector John Kelly said police weren’t aware of the novel attempt to circumvent the liquor ban.

“That’s creative thinking - if I had known that I probably would have joined them.”
