Mindblowing Ways Everything You Love Is Connected
You know Jason Schwartzman?
Sure you do. We all do. And we all love him. We all know and love his work on film and television. But did you know that this work technically includes every single episode of The OC? Because you know this song?
Well the band performing that song is Phantom Planet. Schwartzman was the drummer.
Anyone else look familiar? The lead singer might. That’s Alex Greenwald. You also know him as the total dick bully from Donnie Darko (along with Seth Rogen of course).
The name of the band itself, Phantom Planet, has its own connection to something you love—it’s the name of a 1961 sci-fi film that was featured in episode 902 of Mystery Science Theater 3000.
Speaking of MST3K, multiple cast members also appeared on Freaks and Geeks. Like superstud Joel Hodgson.
And Dr. Forrester/original voice of Crow T. Robot, Trace Beaulieu.
And Frank Conniff, aka, TV’s Frank, was the executive story editor for and also appeared on Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
You know who else appeared on Sabrina the Teenage Witch? Beth Grant. Who played Kitty Farmer in Donnie Darko.
Beth Grant also appeared on The Secret Life of the American Teenager with Shailene Woodley. You know what else Shailene Woodley was in? The OC. She was the original Kaitlin Cooper, sister to Marissa Cooper.
Woodley was also in a made-for-TV movie as a child called Replacing Dad. It starred William Russ. He was the dad in Boy Meets World.
Which of course also gave us baby Adam Scott.
Scott was originally cast as Aaron Tyler in Wonderfalls and appeared in the unaired pilot. The role was later recast with Lee Pace.
Lee Pace would of course go on to co-star in Guardians of the Galaxy. With Chris Pratt. Who used to be on The OC.
Pace also appeared on an episode of The Mindy Project. Which stars Beth Grant.
Coincidentally, also appearing in a couple episodes of The Mindy Project as a character named “Lee” is Max Greenfield. Who played a young Sandy Cohen in The OC.
Speaking of The Mindy Project, Chris Messina was of course on Six Feet Under.
And so was Adam Scott.
Michelle Trachtenberg was on Six Feet Under, too. We mostly know her as Dawn Summers.
But we also know her as Nona Mecklenberg from The Adventures of Pete and Pete.
Debbie Harry was on Pete and Pete, too. Did you know she used to date Penn Jillette? And that he patented a hot tub called the Jill-Jet specifically to be used as a sex aid, an idea he came up with while in a hot tub with Harry, presumably while they were banging in a hot tub?
Jillette of course used to be the voice of Comedy Central. You can hear his voice on most all of the Comedy Central-era tapes of Mystery Science Theater 3000, which many fans still possess from the lost era before DVDs due to the loss of movie rights when it was unlikely most episodes would ever surface again. He also hosted a 1992 special called This is MST3K. It featured interviews with tiny baby Neil Patrick Harris, who was a superfan of the show.
NPH is super good friends with Amy Acker, aka, Winifred Burkle.
She was also of course in Much Ado about Nothing. With Fran Kranz. Who was in Donnie Darko. And all are otherwise heavily involved in the Whedonverse. As is Morena Baccarin. Who was not only on The OC…
…but who is marrying and procreating with Ben McKenzie, aka, Ryan Atwood, patron saint of punched faces, white tank tops and brooding.
For what it’s worth, Kevin Bacon was in neither The OC nor Donnie Darko. Suck it, Bacon.
UPDATE: It’s Golden Globes night and the crawl on E! just told me that Brie Larson is dating Alex Greenwald. From Donnie Darko. And Phantom Planet. Who performed the song “California.” Which is the theme song from The OC. And Larson was in Scott Pilgrim with, and let’s bring it all the way back up to the top for this one, Jason fucking Schwartzman. WHERE IS THE LIE? EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED. I AM A GODDAMN PROPHET. Brie Larson, the day is yours. You won this post.
