Martha Stewart Blasts Goop, Discusses 'Orange is the New Black'

A few sites have been covering Martha Stewart’s interview with Net-a-Porter’s magazine where she takes carefully crafted shots at Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop empire, saying that of the actress “She just needs to be quiet. She’s a movie star. If she were confident in her acting, she wouldn’t be trying to be Martha Stewart” Ouch. Still, it’s unsurprising that she would feel this was, as Goop is something of a competitor for her own business. The biggest difference I can see between the two is that I have a reasonable level of confidence that Stewart can actually do all the things she mentions in her magazine. Paltrow’s version seems to be the equivalent of a really high-end Pinterest page.

The more interesting part of the interview to me, though, is the part where she touches on her feelings about Orange is the New Black and her prison experiences. Apparently she’s not a fan of Piper on the show (join the massive club, Martha. I think we call ourselves “Orange is the New Black viewers.”) but since she’s met the real Piper Kerman, she puts the blame on Taylor Schilling. She also said of women in the prison system “I feel so sorry for all of them in prison. The system lets them down. It’s hideous.”

Martha Stewart: victor of the down-trodden, critic of aspirational lifestyle mags, out of fucks to give.
