John Oliver’s show is an excellent example of amazing reporting and research being communicated in a highly entertaining way. If you didn’t see his recent segment on Televangelists and the way they take advantage of tax laws to fleece the faithful, here it is:
Apparently either some people weren’t aware of this or weren’t as aware of how serious the problem was, because now the IRS is apparently getting pressure to crack down on these prosperity preachers. Now, there’s some debate as to how much the IRS can reasonably do to audit these churches and we have to remember that the reason they rake in so much money is because they have legions of faithful who will be more than willing to write their congressperson if there’s a hint of a chance that the IRS will shut down their favorite preacher. And I notice that we wear a lot more about how tax laws need reforming more than we hear about them actually being reformed. But, hey, if anyone can pull it off, it’s John Oliver.
