Girl Scouts To Transphobic Donor: Keep Your Filthy $100K

The Girl Scouts of Western Washington are teaching their members a lot more than the economics of selling addictive cookies. They’re teaching inclusivity by not only accepting trans members, but also rejecting donors who push to exclude those girls.

Seattle Met reports it was a big day when a single donor offered $100K to the organization, enough to satisfy almost 1/3 of their annual goal, and send 500 girls to camp. But after Caitlyn Jenner came out, the unnamed donor put some big, prejudiced strings on the money:

“Please guarantee that our gift will not be used to support transgender girls. If you can’t, please return the money.”

We’d be willing to bet this transphobic philanthropist thought this meant they’d successfully bullied the Girl Scouts into excluding trans kids. But if that was the plan, it backfired big time. Girl Scouts of Western Washington CEO Megan Ferland returned the money, explaining,

“Girl Scouts is for every girl. And every girl should have the opportunity to be a Girl Scout if she wants to.”

“This is the right thing to do, so there was not anything else to do other than return the gift,” Ferland declares, “And we need the $100,000 back so we can serve more girls. So we’re going to do everything we can to raise that money. And if it raises a ruckus, it raises a ruckus.”

That ruckus is being raised with #ForEVERYGirl, an Indiegogo campaign to make up for the lost funds of the bigoted donor. And it’s off to a sensational start. At the time of posting this, the page has already made 70% of its goal with 30 days to go.
