Elmore Leonard, one of the 20th Century’s best and most prolific novelists (and one of the most cinematic), has died from complications due to a stroke. He was 87. He’s had 26 novels and short stories adapted for the screen over his career, including Jackie Brown, Out of Sight, Get Shorty and 3:10 to Yuma. FX’s “Justified” is also based on the work of Elmore Leonard. (The short-lived series “Karen Sisco” was also based on Leonard’s character from Out of Sight).

If you’re a reader of Leonard’s, you’re also familiar with his punishing, efficient prose. The man could write an engrossing, entertaining novel you could read in a single sitting in the morning, and pick up another Leonard novel before bed.

Leonard was 87, and he obviously lived a nice, long life, but the literary world has lost a great one, and booksellers are losing one of the best reasons to buy a book.

R.I.P. Elmore Leonard. May the afterlife look like Steven Soderbergh’s version of Detroit.
