We learned today that Emma Watson will be playing Belle in Disney’s live action Beauty and the Beast. This is pretty on-the-nose casting. Belle is a smart, caring, strong woman (if you focus on her self-sacrifice rather than the emotional abuse). That’s pretty much the exact reputation Watson has carved out for herself over the last few years.
Based on Watson’s Facebook announcement, it sounds like this will basically be a live action version of the animated film, complete with the same songs. Does this mean he co-stars will be CGI candlesticks and clocks? That has potential to be pretty terrible, but it at least offers us an opportunity to dreamcast a bunch of inanimate objects. Here’s what I’m hoping for:
Lumiere: Neil Patrick Harris
Cogsworth: Bill Nighy
Babette, that saucy feather duster: Alison Brie
Gaston is Jon Hamm, obviously.
Mrs. Potts: Angela Lansbury (THIS IS NON-NEGOTIABLE, DISNEY)
Chip the cup
—has to be played by Bobby Draper.
Maurice: Richard Dreyfuss
The Beast is a hard casting call. Personally, I think it should go to Pedro Pascal (For general beauty and awesomeness over actual resemblance)
But it looks like Jake Gyllenhaal has already been gearing up for the part.
