First things first, yes, this is all from a source at the New York Post. An unnamed source who is “close” to the family. But in a backward, upside world where InTouch is breaking molestation and coverup stories, and stand-up comedians are bringing to light a decades old, worst kept secret, I’m not really sure we should dismiss anything out of hand.
Throughout all of the accusers and confessions surrounding Cosby’s dozens of rapes, one of the big questions is “How is is wife staying with him?” Of course humans are able to deny almost anything that they don’t want to acknowledge, but it would be interesting to know how she individually manages to dismiss nearly 40 women as liars. And with Bill’s recently exposed Quaalude admission, it’d be hard to explain away everything as the media trying to take down a powerful man.
As it turns out, Camille Cosby doesn’t need to explain away much. Because while she acknowledges that Bill drugged and had sex with many, many women, Camille insists that all of those women consented to it. Uh- huh.
“Camille still doesn’t believe that Bill provided drugs and had sex with women without their consent,” said a source employed by the Cosby family. “She’s well aware of his cheating, but she doesn’t believe that her husband is a rapist. So the fact that Bill’s story and his accusers’ stories lines up almost entirely except for the consent part is proof to Camille that actually all of those women must have consented. Bill magically came across 40 women who were absolutely down with ingesting a drug which would knock them out and boning a guy they just met. Even for the ’70s that seems like some varsity level sex.
Of course, Camille does believe that the media is playing a role in how Bill and his accusers are being portrayed. Namely:
“They are making him out to be such a bad guy, a monster,” Camille said, according to the source.
Can everyone feel the rape culture in the air? We’ve finally learned that if someone can be identified as a “rapist”, he must be a terrible person (getting the label “rapist” properly applied is a whole, ‘nother ball of shit that I can’t get into right now). But people have started believing the reverse is true also. “He isn’t a terrible person, therefore he can’t be a rapist.” Well I hate to break it to you, Camille, but rapists don’t usually wear their terribleness out in the open. Cosby could have been a loving husband and a rapist. He could be a great father and a rapist. He could be a dedicated friend, a hard working artist, a role model from those around him and the entire black community, and still be a rapist. But once you’re a great guy and dedicated father who has raped 39 women, you’ve pretty much exposed yourself as “a bad guy.”
That’s not to say that Camille deserves no sympathy. She’s been married to and business manager of Bill for over 50 years. I wouldn’t have blamed her for not being able to see that they man she loved and married was hiding a horrific secret. But I blame her now for intentionally staying blind to it.
