British Research Council Asks Internet To Name Its New State Of The Art Ship. Internet Does What It Does Best

Releasing a statement recently, the Natural Environment Research Council announced the birth of a new £200 million, 15,000 tonne, 128-metre-long polar research vessel, and the search for its name:

Tonne-for-tonne, the ship - together with NERC’s existing two blue water research ships - will provide the UK with the most advanced floating research fleet in the world and will help put the UK at the forefront of ocean research for years to come

We’re looking for an inspirational name that exemplifies the work it will do.

The ship could be named after a local historical figure, movement, or landmark — or a famous polar explorer or scientist

We would like the name to be inspirational and about environmental and polar science, to help us tell everyone about the amazing work the ship does.

So, obviously, the internet has already crashed the Council’s website numerous times with the sheer volume of traffic that has selected the current and overwhelming front-runner:

RSS Boaty McBoatyface.

A few more further behind in the pack were:

RSS Its Bloody Cold Here

RSS What Iceberg

RSS Captain Haddock

RSS Big Shipinnit

RSS Science!!!

RSS Big Metal Floaty Thingy-thing

Which, you know, are all amazing.

Unfortunately, there exist people in this world who just don’t like goodness, and thus the name will ultimately be chosen by a panel of experts. Who, let’s face it, will probably name it after an explorer, instead of making Boaty McBoatface an explorer!

Killjoys.
