And This Is Why We Despise: A California Insurance Company Delivered an Elderly Man's Settlement in Coins

What the ever-loving fork? You know how you’re scrolling through the news and something so bizarre you can’t believe it catches your eye…and then you force yourself to read it even though you know you shouldn’t, and it makes you rage and want to set everything on fire? Yes, that’s the worst sentence ever, but you’ll understand my discombobulation when you read this story.

In 2012, 73 year old Andres Carrasco sued Adriana’s Insurance Service, Inc. after an employee allegedly assaulted him. A settlement agreement was made, and when it finally came time for the company to pay up, “…eight of Adriana’s Insurance employees arrived in a van with five-gallon containers full of coins in hand.” The pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters —delivered along with a check — amounted to over $21,000. Carrasco, who just underwent a hernia operation, noted that he couldn’t even lift one of the coin buckets; *luckily* the delivery was made to his attorney’s office waiting room. In his statement to the press, Carrasco said, “I am disappointed by the way Adriana’s treats their customers and the elderly. We might be poor, but we are people too.”

Not surprisingly, Adriana’s Yelp reviews are generally one-star, with plenty of people clarifying in their comments there should be zero or half-star ratings. I’m not going to start down the rabbit hole of all the insurance industry problems in this country, because it’s so fucking dark and deep, we might never come back up.
