And Now, Your Capybara Moment of Zen
In Collateral, Michael Mann’s brilliant examination of existential isolation in the heart of urban sprawl, Jamie Foxx plays a cab driver, Max, with big dreams and even bigger delusions. He wishes to one day own his own luxury limo company, to ferry the well-heeled of Los Angeles from place to place, turning the journey into as much of an opulent experience as whatever their destination might be. The cab gig is just to make ends meet, and to save up enough capital to finance the dream. Or so he tells himself. But the stop-gap job has taken up over a decade of his life, and while he repeats the mantra to himself and others, the grim reality of his situation has begun to dawn on him. He may never be able to escape the grind of his day to day. It may be messy pick ups and tyrannical bosses all the way down. To alleviate his stress Max keeps a photo of a tropical island in his cab at all times, tucked away safely. When things get too much he slides it out, gazes at it longingly and zones out, finding escape and peace if just for a moment.
Anyway on that note, here’s just, like, a whole buttload of capybaras. And a bonus doggo. It’s Friday, and oh lord has it been a trying week. You have earned it, your moment of Zen. Escape just for a few moments, friends:
