Actor Jon Polito, who is probably best known for his work in the Coen Brothers films, has passed away, according to director and friend John McNaughton The character actor will be remembered for roles in Miller’s Crossing, Barton Fink, The Big Lebowski and The Man Who Wasn’t There.

With 217 film credits, however, Polito will be mostly remembered as a prolific that guy — the guy from that thing you loved — and while instant name recognition is not always associated with that label, there’s something beautifully immortal about it. He’s the kind of guy that will continue to show up on our screens for decades to come, as we watch and rewatch movies and television shows. Even as the memory of his death fades, he will remain an indelible figure, every bit as alive in Barton Fink or that episode of Scrubs we saw the night before or that episode of Gilmore Girls we will one day show to our teenage daughters. He will never cease to be a presence in our lives, although now his presence may bring along with our appreciation a pang of sadness.

Our condolences, however, go out to his spouse, actor Darryl Armbruster, and those who personally knew and loved him.
