About That Time Miley Cyrus Got Netflix's 'Grace & Frankie' Renewed For a Second Season

TV is a weird place. You can gather an Academy Award winner (Jane Fonda), two Oscar nominees (Lily Tomlin and Sam Waterson), and the greatest fake president the country’s ever had (Martin Sheen— apologies to Bill Pullman), and put them in a show from the creator of Friends, one of the most popular TV shows of all time. And still, the best way to ensure the project’s success is with 140 characters from Miley Cyrus.

Marta Kauffman announced today that Netflix had renewed Grace and Frankie, about an odd couple pairing of women dealing with their husbands leaving them for each other, for a second season. In the announcement, Kauffman made sure to give credit where it’s due: to Netflix, but mostly to a tweet Miley Cyrus posted this weekend.

Let me say, it’s so awesome to do a show on Netflix. Because two and a half weeks after we launched, Miley Cyrus does a Tweet about your show, and they call and say, ‘We’d like to do a season two.’ So yes, there is a season two. We have Ted [Sarandos, a Netflix executive] and Miley to thank.

Just how much of a role Cyrus played in the renewal is, of course, questionable. Though, while Kauffman’s statement sounds pretty tongue-in-cheek, we should never underestimate the power of a well-placed emoji with an audience of 20 million teenagers. If Miley wants to start on the Happy Endings reunion pleas, I don’t think anyone would complain.

Vivian Kane has still only seen the show’s first two episodes, but there WAS a pretty great peyote-fueled sequence she could see appealing to Miley.
