True Parody is Impossible Because Reality is Absurd

Grey’s Anatomy on ABC at 8:00pm ET. Geena Davis got me last week, guys. I’m not proud of it. I had to see if she was gonna make it. Derek’s sister they brought over from Private Practice is so terrible. So, SO terrible. But Geena Davis was great.

Archer on FX at 10:00pm ET.

Dig on USA at 10:00pm ET. I watched the first episode of this last week and it hit all the notes I expect out of a USA drama/mystery: manic pixie dream archeologist! Reserved male lead with tragic backstory! Unnecessary sexual complication! Morally questionable religious zealots of several stripes! Blood sacrifice! Ancient caves and mysterious artifacts! It’s all a lot of flash and so far not much depth and I’m pretty OK with that, overall.

Portlandia on IFC at 10:00pm ET. Fifth season finale. Five seasons in, I’d be a little worried that they’d be getting ready to run out of material if I wasn’t painfully aware of the fact that nothing can out-ridiculous parody like reality. This show could run for decades.

Vikings on History at 10:00pm ET.
