NFL Special: Super Bowl XLIX on NBC at 6:30pm ET. This is, quite obviously, the biggest game in town tonight so the question is less “what else is on” and more “IS there anything else on?” In my research, I have found that there are two networks willing to counter program the Super Bowl with new episodes; PBS and Showtime.
Downton Abbey on PBS at 9:00p ET. The crass American version of “football” will not stand in the way of Mary’s quest for happiness! And, like, whatever the hell is going on with Bates again. I swear to god, you guys, didn’t we have a whole season about how Bates DIDN’T kill someone, and now we’ve got a whole season where we’re supposed to think he totally did and just went about his life like nothing happened? Shouldn’t that make some people start to wonder a bit about the fate of the first Mrs.Bates? Like Anna? RUN, ANNA! GET AWAY FROM THIS BORING AND POSSIBLY MURDEROUS MAN!
Shameless on Showtime at 9:00pm ET.
Grantchester on PBS at 10:00pm ET.
The Blacklist on NBC at 10:15pm ET. Second season winter premiere. The coveted post-Super Bowl slot. Last year on Fox we got New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, before that, Elementary on CBS. Honestly, it seems like most shows that get this spot do pretty well, and it’s hosted the “Leonard Betts” episode of The X-Files so that’s kinda cool. For other TV dorks interested in this, there’s a full list on Wikipedia because you have never had a question the internet hasn’t already answered.
Genevieve Burgess has no rooting interest in this Super Bowl, and none in the Bates marriage on Downton either.
