Arrow on The CW at 8:00pm ET.

Fresh Off the Boat on ABC at 8:30pm ET. Series premiere. I hope this is what they say it is, a comedy about being a first generation American without resorting to cheap stereotypes. Until middle school I lived in an area where we had a lot of new immigrant families in the neighborhood, and watching sitcom after sitcom of almost exclusively white people has always felt off to me. Anyway, two episodes of this tonight, one here and one at 9:30pm after Modern Family.

Empire on Fox at 9:01pm ET. I’ve seen some people say they can’t possibly get into a show with complex family dynamics, a POWERHOUSE female lead (seriously, Taraji is PHENOMENAL on this show), and delightfully soapy storylines because the leads have such ridiculous names. I will admit that while it might take you a minute to get used to Lucious (pronounced “Lucius”) and Cookie, they have NOTHING on the Mormons. If I can put aside my incredulity that an independent record label would manage to get big enough in this day and age to warrant an IPO instead of being bought out by one of the Big 3, y’all can deal with Cookie and Lucious.

The Americans on FX at 10:00pm ET.

Nashville on ABC at 10:00pm ET. Third season winter premiere. I’ve seen promos for this that indicate that Connie Britton is sad. I hope it doesn’t have a negative effect on her magical hair.

Genevieve Burgess spends equal amounts of time marveling at Cookie, the woman, and Cookie’s wardrobe.
