Super Bowl Counterprogramming Guide (Hint: Just Watch PBS)

There’s a big old football game on tonight but so far I have met 0 people who are enthusiastic about it, and I’ve talked to Pats fans. Anyway, it’s on Fox kicking off at 6:30pm, sometime around 8-ish I think Lady Gaga will perform and that might be worth watching. But here’s what else might be worth watching tonight:

Mercy Street on PBS at 8:00pm ET.

Black Sails on Starz

Victoria on PBS at 9:00pm ET. I’m guessing PBS is well aware that their target demographic of Viking River Cruise enthusiasts are unlikely to be at watch parties for a big football game. They seem to be the only channel keeping their full slate of standard programming on tonight.

The Young Pope on HBO at 9:00pm ET.

24: Legacy on Fox at 10:30pm ET. Series premiere. This will start whenever the Super Bowl ends so don’t get too attached to that 10:30pm time slot. I’m curious to see how Jack Bauer’s America reacts to the world being saved by the grit and determination of young Corey Hawkins playing Eric Carter. I still think that any series based around a series of attacks that keep escalating to be the “largest scale” or “biggest ever” are sort of doomed to falter under their own weight eventually, but whatever.
