Air Jaws: Fins of Fury on Discovery at 8:00pm ET. Special presentation. Hey guys, it’s Shark Week again! More on that below.

Shark of Darkness: Wrath of Submarine on Discovery at 9:00pm ET. Two hour special presentation. Here’s the thing, I know that Shark Week was originally started to bring attention to sharks and that they’re amazing creatures who rarely hurt humans and yet are hunted to dangerous levels in many places. And some of the programming still does that. And then there’s shows like this, about a mythical (and likely physically impossible) 30 ft. Great White shark that was long rumored to be hunting off the coast of South Africa. Their stated goal and the tone of their programming seem at odds with each other. I understand that sensationalized accounts of shark attacks probably draw more viewers, though, even when they get as repetitive as some of the other features. It’s a conundrum.

True Blood on HBO at 9:00pm ET.

The Leftovers on HBO at 10:00pm ET. All the previews for this show like to show scenes that look very scary and ominous and then turn out not to be. Like the one last week with Nora on the sidewalk. I still like it, I just wish they’d stop teasing a bunch of action that’s clearly not happening.

The Strain on FX at 10:00pm ET.

Genevieve Burgess hopes her mixed feelings regarding Shark Week don’t dampen anyone else’s enjoyment of this very special time of year.
