Forever on ABC at 10:00pm ET. Time slot premiere. So I watched the first episode of this all night because I figured I could get behind an immortal medical examiner. And for a while, it was going pretty well; quirky assistant, grumpy yet caring best friend, “He’s immortal but he hasn’t really LIVED for YEARS” theme, and getting the season-long mystery introduced pretty early on. Great! Totally still with it. Then it became apparent that they’re making this another cop buddy show like Bones or Castle where the cop gets to haul around a non-cop because apparently we have to have a cop as a main character to sell a series about an IMMORTAL MEDICAL EXAMINER. Come on now, people! I am thoroughly disheartened and will watch tonight but under protest and its prospects for inclusion on my regular fall TV-watching schedule have fallen considerably. I mean, he was always going to have to interact with cops, but I prefer him having his investigations and all completely separate from official police work. Also: when he does his reincarnation thing, what happens to his clothes? They didn’t cover that, and his pocket watch got left behind, so wouldn’t there just be a pile of clothes sitting there Rapture-style? I mean, I get it if they were just looking for good excuses to showcase naked Ioan Gruffudd but these things need to be thought through.
Genevieve Burgess is rarely so disappointed in a new show so very quickly. Usually she can see it coming.
