So You Think You Can Dance on Fox at 8:00pm ET. 11th season premiere. The show I find tolerable with liberal use of DVR and the “fast-forward” feature (and sometimes not even then) returns!
Rake on DirecTV at 9:00pm ET. Third season premiere.
The World Wars on History at 9:00pm ET. First season finale.
Big Ballet on Ovation at 10:00pm ET. Series premiere. This is a new series featuring plus-size ballerinas in a production of Swan Lake. I’d feel better about the show, had the casting call not specifically said that no prior experience was necessary. I think there’s a point to be made about the alarming body standards in ballet and that grace and athleticism have little to do with weight, but luring women with no previous ballet experience for a production of Swan Lake just seems as though they’re going for spectacle. And yes, I am familiar with reality TV and know that’s exactly what they wanted to do. That doesn’t mean I can’t hope for better. I’m sure there are many women who were trained up until adolescence who abandoned dance due to their figure who could have participated and proven the same point without diminishing the art of ballet the way an open casting call does by implying that untrained amateurs can learn to dance in a few weeks. And if they’re expecting these women to go en pointe in that amount of time, they may be physically damaging the participants as well.
NBC New Exclusive with Brian Williams: Inside the Mind of Edward Snowden on NBC at 10:00pm ET. Mr.Williams actually went to Moscow to speak with Snowden. As this is NBC, I’m still not getting my hopes up.
Genevieve Burgess respects all artists and resists the notion that untrained amateurs just need “heart” and a few weeks to master their craft.
