'True Detective's' Best Actor May Be Marvel's 'Doctor Strange' Co-Lead

Let’s just get this out of the way right now: I’ve only seen the first two episodes of True Detective’s second season (catching up on the third tonight), and so far, I’m not terribly impressed. But the one standout — the one character I’m interested in — is Rachel McAdams’ Ani Bezzerides. Though I’ve barely seen her in anything else (Sherlock Holmes), that distinguishing fact; that she’s been able to pique my interest amid the paper mâché bullshit Nic Pizzolatto is feeding us, makes McAdams the series’ best actor (sorry, Farrell!). It looks like I’m not the only one to notice.

Via Heroic Hollywood comes word McAdams has been offered the “female lead” opposite Benedict Cumberbatch in the MCU’s upcoming Doctor Strange. If McAdams accepts, she’ll join the SWINTON™’s genderswapped Ancient One, and Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Baron Mordo, but who would the actress play? Interwebbical speculation is leaning heavily toward Clea, Doctor Strange’s lover and a sorceress with her own superpowers. Daughter of the Dark Dimension’s Umar and Prince Orini (as well as Strange foe, Dormammu’s niece), after working together with Doctor Strange, Clea and the Sorcerer Supreme fall in love, and eventually marry.

If I’d have heard this news a month ago, my reaction might have been indifference, but McAdams’ smart, straight-shooting, and haunted Bezzerides has sucked me into TD despite a lot of misgivings. That she’s rising above the material she’s been handed (especially in the boys’ club world Pizzolatto so loves) is definitive proof she’ll be great alongside the likes of Cumberbatch, Ejiofor, and the SWINTON; here’s hoping McAdams takes the role.
