Hey! Hey! This is one of several covers to this month’s Vanity Fair:

Do you see that name at the bottom? That’s Joanna Fucking Robinson, people. She wrote the cover story for Vanity Fair this month, and it’s not just any cover story: It’s a huge piece on Kevin Feige, the guy who runs Marvel. Ninety percent of you know this, but for those that don’t: Joanna used to be a writer here. And she wasn’t just any writer. Joanna helped transform this place from a dog-and-pony show into a website that is now referred to as part of the “feminist media.” She was a towering voice on the site for a lot of years, and she got a lot of shit from old-schoolers who didn’t like the way that Pajiba changed when she was here. Those people can go screw (actually, most of them already have). Joanna was a big deal around here, and still is (I mentioned on our Thanksgiving post that her presence can still be felt here every day).

What I really like about this cover story is that it is trademark Joanna: It’s fun and clever and a breezy read, but it is not a fawning puff piece: She’s critical of Marvel where it’s called for, and she doesn’t gloss over their missteps. It’s also a very entertaining read. Typical Joanna, you know.

The big “news” from the piece, however, is confirmation from Feige that like there was a pre-Joanna Pajiba and a post-Joanna Pajiba, there will also be a pre-Avengers 4 Marvel universe and a post-Avengers 4 Marvel universe. After Infinity Wars Part 2 in May 2019, things will change. There were be a “finale.” As Joanna writes, “This may mean a lot of dead Avengers at the hands of the villain Thanos, who has appeared sporadically and tantalizingly since the first Avengers movie back in 2012.”

“There will be two distinct periods,” Feige says. “Everything before Avengers 4 and everything after. I know it will not be in ways people are expecting,”

It could be the end of the run for characters like Captain America or Iron Man or Black Widow or Hawkeye. But that’s OK, because the next generation will be led by the likes of Spider-Man and Black Panther and Captain Marvel and the Guardians of the Galaxy, plus any number of 7000 characters they have at their disposal. It’ll be different, but to a lot of people, it may be better. Fewer white dudes, and more women and POC, which is essentially what happened to this site before and after Joanna.
