As you can tell from TK’s review, Avengers: Age of Ultron has a lot going for it: Great character moments, bonkers action sequences, the smug revels of James Spader’s villainous mass-murder bot, and many many cameos of previously established Marvel supporting players. But one part of the MCU left noticeably out of all the fun was Loki. And it turns out Tom Hiddleston actually was supposed to be in the final film.

Director Joss Whedon explained to MTV, “We did shoot something, but it didn’t play. The movie has so much. It’s so filled. We didn’t want it to feel overstuffed. I really wanted to have Loki in it, but I understood the decision that there were now too many voices in the chorus…At some point the embarrassment of riches is actually embarrassing.”

So—Whedon implies—studio notes led to Loki being cut out.

I won’t go into spoilers, but I will say that I can think of several scenes that could have been cut instead of more time with the world’s favorite Marvel villain.

Sigh. Begin the countdown to Avengers: Age of Ultron DVD release, accompanied with this deleted scene that now dominates my thoughts.

Kristy Puchko once wrote a review of Thor 2 in the voice of Loki. It is among her greatest accomplishments.
