James Gunn on 'Guardians 2,' Female Superheroes, and Other Marvel Properties He'd Like to Direct

Collider has a great rundown of Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn’s Dragon Con Q and A session, where fans touched on everything from character changes between the film and comic, to what other film projects he has in mind, and whether or not Ms. Marvel might appear in Guardians 2. James’ brother Sean, aka Kraglin, and Rocket Racoon’s “motion reference” person, discussed how his Rocket contribution was filmed — on his knees (so as to get Rocket’s eye level in relation to other characters correct). The motion reference scenes were filmed from beginning to end.

When asked if he’d be bringing any female superheroes in for Guardians 2, and even more specifically, if he’d introduce Carol Danvers, James answered that he didn’t want to add any earthlings to this particular universe. The director prefers to have Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill be the “main focus from Earth.” Gunn did add that he thought Ms. Marvel would soon be making a Marvel movie appearance, and that “there were plenty of other women in the comic book roster of Guardians of the Galaxy and he was more than excited to begin introducing them into future films. The plan, according to Gunn, is to introduce new female characters into the world of Guardians as soon as he could.”

When asked about changes to Peter/Star Lord and Michael Rooker’s Yondu, Gunn said he takes his cues from Marvel’s Ultimate comic line, giving characters a modern spin. “It was about focusing on these less than pristine qualities of each of the characters before taking them on the journey that would find them in a different place.” He plans to continue evolving the characters as the Guardians series moves forward.

Additionally, the director discussed other Marvel properties he’s interested in working on; those include Hit-Monkey (A suited killer monkey? Yes, please.) and Thunderbolts (currently back-burnered while he focuses on the “cosmic” side of Marvel. Gunn would also like to tackle (non-Marvel) an adaptation of Grant Morrison’s We3.

For much more detail, including the story of Stan Lee’s original cameo (as one of the Collector’s exhibits!), head over to Collider.

And now I leave you with footage of the brothers Gunn leading the “world’s biggest Grooting.” Spoilerish if by some chance you haven’t gotten out to see Guardians of the Galaxy yet. (Why haven’t you seen Guardians of the Galaxy yet?)

Cindy Davis, (Twitter) may be Grooting you right now.
