'Avengers: Infinity War' Directors Confirmed, and Marvel's 'Doctor Strange' Mentor Shortlist Is Pretty Great

There are two bits of Marvel news to pass on today; one Sony leak-related, and one not. Firstly, in the last batch of Amy Pascal’s emails — the same round that revealed Sony’s Spider-Man plans — it became clear that the Russo Brothers (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) are ready to be completely entrenched in the Marvel universe. While Anthony and Joe have already signed on for Captain America: Civil War, the directors also had their feelers out with Sony for a Spider-Man cameo in Civil War, but ultimately, that match-up didn’t get approved.

“A pity that negotiations with Marvel did not work.”

No worries; the Russos are still big time winners, because as was rumored, they’ve inherited the next two Avengers films. That’s right people, it’s time to start sobbing those ugly tears; Joss Whedon is moving on. The information was brought up in correspondence referring to the Sony property, The Gray Man, starring Robert Downey Jr.; the Russos assured Pascal that directing the two Infinity Wars won’t interfere with that film.

The second Marvel tidbit concerns the latest casting rumors about who’ll join Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange. Latino Review claims they’ve got Marvel’s wishlist of actors to play Doctor Strange’s mentor, aka the Ancient One.

Here, in no particular order, are the rumored candidates:

Ken Watanabe

Morgan Freeman

Bill Nighy

When first I saw a headline that read: “Freeman, Nighy, Watanabe Sought to Play the Ancient One,” I had a pretty funny moment of incredulity that Marvel would actually reunite Sherlock and Watson for a comic film, and now I’m kind of wishing they would…but I digress. All three of these actors are great, so I’ll leave it to you comic experts to hash out any grievances. As LR notes, the film isn’t expected to be an origins story, and there’s no word on how substantial the Ancient One’s role will be.
