The Nightly Show aired its final episode last night, and, probably unexpectedly, got a visit from Jon Stewart with some comforting words of wisdom.

So here’s the thing, Larry and I have a history. I really wanted to like the show, but I really didn’t. And I quit watching regularly more than a year ago. But what Stewart said about Wilmore starting a conversation is true.

About the ways in which recent leaders have implemented racist laws in order to gain political power.

About how many Americans are still unwilling to acknowledge the issues with racism we still experience.

About how goddamn racist Fox News is. All. The. Time.

And, of course, not everything he covered was about race and race relations because, of course, race isn’t the only issue important to African-Americans. But we, unfortunately, don’t have a lot of of shows that are tackling race issues, and we now, unfortunately, have one fewer show tackling racism with someone who knows what it’s like to be the victim of it.

If we’re lucky, Wilmore will get another show to try to get it right. If we’re very lucky, we might even get another show from an underrepresented voice. And in the meantime, we can only hope to keep the conversation going.
