Stephen Colbert Addresses Bullsh*t #FireColbert Controversy

On Monday night, Stephen Colbert referred to Donald Trump as “Vladimir Putin’s cock holster.” Everyone with a trace of intelligence knew what Stephen Colbert meant by this, and it needs no explanation. Was it a poor choice of words? Yes, especially in this heightened political climate, but everyone also knows that Stephen Colbert is not homophobic.

Everyone.

Nevertheless, a lot of people on the right saw an opening. People who regularly use homophobic slurs with actual homophobic intent thought, “Ooooh. We got him now!”

A lot of people on the right started comparing a joke using a poor analogy to what Bill O’Reilly did, which was to serially harass women who he had power over, because making a joke about the most powerful man in the world is exactly the same as a man using his power to take sexual advantage of women. Exactly.

It was spite. The right went after Colbert out of spite. Nothing more, nothing less. They know Colbert is not homophobic, and they knew there was no homophobic intent behind the joke, but they seized upon a poor analogy and tried to get Stephen Colbert fired for it.

They can go fuck themselves.

Stephen Colbert addressed the controversy last night, and though he expressed some regret about the choice of words, he expressed none for his intent or the message he was trying to relay: That Donald Trump is a dangerous man who is in bed with a foreign enemy.

Now, if you saw my monologue Monday, you know that I was a little upset at Donald Trump for insulting a friend of mine. So at the end of that monologue I had a few choice insults for the president in return. I don’t regret that. He, I believe, can take care of himself. I have jokes; he has the launch codes. So, it’s a fair fight.

So while I would do it again, I would change a few words that were cruder than they needed to be. I’m not going to repeat the phrase, but I just want to say for the record, life is short, and anyone who expresses their love for another person, in their own way, is to me, an American hero. I think we can all agree on that. I hope even the president and I can agree on that. Nothing else but that.

Meanwhile, rumors were that Donald Trump was signing an executive order today that will allow people to discriminate against the LGBTQ community*, and the same Trump supporters trying to get Stephen Colbert fired for a joke are celebrating a deeply discriminatory, homophobic order. And if that doesn’t piss you off, I don’t know what will. A hateful, deluded, mentally imbalanced man is running our country, and a hateful, scared, and ignorant segment of the population is lining up behind him. We’re in a bad fucking place right now.

(* That executive order is not actually what most thought it would be. It’s not an order designed to discriminate against the LGBTQ movement, but one that would allow churches to make political donations. It doesn’t erase the fact, however, that Trump supporters would’ve celebrated the rumored order.)
