Seth Meyers Obliterates Republican Position on Syrian Refugees

Early in October, just after Trevor Noah took over as host of The Daily Show, Pajiba alum Joanna Robinson astutely noted it might be Seth Meyers who is the real spiritual successor to Jon Stewart. That observation initially gave me a funny eye squinch, but I have been checking in periodically with Mr. Meyers since he gave up the monologue and began each show at his desk

Joanna wasn’t wrong. While Noah is still making many of the same jokes as Stewart, he doesn’t have the presence yet, and all the laughing at his own jokes, Fallon-style, isn’t helping. Meyers, on the other hand, is delivering thoughtful political commentary and, even more than Noah, pointing out the hypocrisy of our politicians.

Take, for instance, Meyers’ “Closer Look,” last night, in which Meyers gave up any pretense of political objectivity and went straight for the jugulars of the current GOP Presidential field on the Syrian Refugee crisis. This is the liberal catharsis we needed to offset the bloviating idiocy coming from conservatives on the issue. Meyers is funny; he is sharp; there is a much-needed note of self-righteousness in his voice; and he reduces Ted Cruz to a little puddle of hypocrisy.

“According to the Migration Policy Institute since 2001 the United States has resettled 781,000 refugees and out of all of those the total number that have been arrested for planning terrorist activities has been three,” Meyers notes, before joking, “There are more arrests in the parking lot of an Eagles game. Not even on Sunday. Just, like, mid-week.”
