If The Congressional Democrats Can't Stop President Bannon, Maybe The Scottish Can

So, the past couple of days have been a little rough. Despite a Democratic push to defeat their nominations, both Betsy DeVos and Jeff Sessions were confirmed to their cabinet positions. It seems like the outnumbered Democrats are powerless to stop President Bannon, and that despite Trump’s clear incompetency and isolation, making him feel bad isn’t slowing the racist, xenophobic, war machine. As Seth Meyers points out, there are more than a few things to be discouraged about.

Only I’m not so sure that the belittling of Trump isn’t working. If for no other reason than it seems to always work. Listen, we’re dealing with an egomaniac. This isn’t the Koch brothers or Rupert Murdoch willing to hide in shadows, and allow their money to exert all their influence. Trump had a reality show. He has a Twitter account. He’s “written” eight books, which is seven-and-a-half books more than he’s read. He wants us to love and respect him, and it kind of kills him that we don’t. It might not be enough to get him out of office after 19 days, but as Full Frontal lays out, it seems to be enough to keep him away from his mother’s homeland and, more importantly, a business opportunity.

1) I’ll never get used to the fact that citizens of the U.K. use “quite” to mean “not very much.” It’s always a slight mindfuck.

2) We’ve all got a new crush, right?

No? Just me? That’s fine.

But more to the point, we can’t give up because we didn’t win immediately. And we’re going to need to learn to take our victories where we can get them. The phone calls didn’t stop DeVos’ confirmation, but it did get two Republicans to break with their party to vote against her. We’ve forced real, intense scrutiny of Trump’s cabinet nominees, and that’s pissing him off. He wants us to be dazzled with the style and image of his persona; we’re going to continue questioning the competency and substance of his administration. It’ll take time, but we’ll starve him out eventually. I mean, he’s really such a dick.
