'Full Frontal' Slogs Through The Horrific Yet Mundane Implications Of Climate Change

Sam Bee devoted her full show last night not to the ongoing shitshow that is our President, but the ongoing shitshow that is our national response to climate change. Or that thing that half of Americans refer to as “fake” or “anal gasses.” I again recommend watching the whole show (they put it up on YouTube for a reason, people), but if I have to choose just one segment to discuss, let’s go with this one.

See, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about Geostorm (yes, I know it was mentioned in a different Full Frontal segment. It’s just been on my mind). Rebecca might have taught us the best way to watch it, but what’s the real implication of the movie? Other than the fact that Gerard Butler is now with us forever?

Mainly that most Americans expect someone else to do it. We’ll get a genius maverick who plays by his own rules, and he’ll (get real, it’s always a “he’ll”) come up with a genius, outside-the-box solution that’s maverick. (This is the first draft of my screenplay.) Most of us want to believe that can happen. It’s part of the reason we’ve got the Orange Menace right now. But it’s also partly because things like this have happened before. Major turn-of-the-century cities had no idea what to do with their giant manure problem until someone invented the car, which never, ever created any further problems.

Also let’s not forget, solving problems is hard. It takes years of slow, day-to-day effort and improvement. It means we have to do stuff even though we don’t see the results and feel like we’re powerless to make a difference. It requires that we just keep trying even in the face of a blatantly apathetic or even oppositional government. Why not just wait until Dr. Maverick Esquire rides in with his genius machine to save the day? At least until the genius machine turns on us. Then we’re really fucked.
