When The Enemy Of Your Enemy Is A Russian Troll, Do You Have To Be Nice To Nazis?

I don’t know anymore, guys. I just don’t know. Last year, when the whole world lost its damn mind, we collectively braced ourselves for the worst. Imagining that “the worst” would include Trump turning over the keys to the White House to Putin, and locking John Lovett in jail. I don’t think anyone expected that “the worst” would include asking ourselves repeatedly, “Wait, am I supposed to be nice to Nazis?”

So the answer to that is “no.” No one is supposed to be nice to Nazis. But we can’t pretend there aren’t some conflicting messages about the best ways to #resist in the current Trump adjusted world. We’re suppose to stand up and fight back, but also that fighting may or may not be a Russian ploy designed to dissolve American democracy. If we do protest a racist anti-Muslim rally are we playing into the Russians hands? But if we don’t protest, are we allowing the bigots to win? Should we be focused on our fellow countrypeople, and let the government deal with international espionage? But the espionage was targeted at and carried out by our fellow citizens so shouldn’t we be addressing the problem directly? If Trumpism is a backlash to recent progressive victories as well as the economic devastation wrought by Republican policies, can we try to bring Trump voters into the fold by addressing their “economic anxieties”? Or do we recognize that actually those “economic anxieties” amount to “brown people are doing better than me and that ain’t right”, and say fuck ‘em?

Turns out, Trump doesn’t have to play 3-D chess if he can just fuck up the situation so bad that we can NEVER STOP TRYING TO SOLVE FOR ALL THE THINGS.

So like I said, I don’t know, man. What I do know is that people made history all over the country on Tuesday by worrying less about what to argue about, and more about what to fight for. Maybe we don’t have to argue with out racist old uncles at Thanksgiving this year, but maybe we won’t be able to because we’re too busy working on a recently elected officials transition team to make it home for the holiday. Or maybe you go home, and still don’t fight because you’re just there for the stuffing. Maybe we’re not bad people if we don’t pick every battle. Maybe just being an openly liberal, tolerant human being will be enough to convince enough people that bigotry isn’t the answer. Maybe.

Although if there’s a black woman out there who could reassure me about this, I would really appreciate it.
