And of course when I say “we,” I mean mostly black people, especially black women, voting in Alabama. Most of “us” didn’t do anything except wish real hard.

But in the immediate aftermath of this win (brought to you by black women who deserve our thanks, but also deserve tangible, equitable treatment in the form of greater resources, representation, and respect), DON’T FUCKING RUIN THIS. Let us have it. We know things are still bad. We know that an election between a well-respected prosecutor and an actual child molester should have never been this close. We know that having a sitting president who’s been accused of sexual assault by nineteen twenty different women is fucked up. We know.

We also know that educating people on issues surrounding sexism and racism is hard, usually fruitless, work. And that as much as we might be willing to change our own behavior, our own behavior isn’t what got Moore the Republican nomination. This isn’t a case of us celebrating cutting back from two packs a day to just one. This is a case of us helping a friend finally give up smoking, and you tut-tutting because there are still so many people who die from lung cancer. We fucking know.

So just let us have this. It’s an important victory, and we don’t have a lot of those. We finally get to have a parade because it’s sunny out, and you’re reminding us to prepare for rain. Don’t be that guy. That guy sucks.
