One 'How I Met Your Mother' Cast Member Continues to Insist On Defending That Goddamn Ending

Though Josh Radnor kind of apologized for the ending to How I Met Your Mother, Alyson Hannigan has said that she would’ve done things differently, and Jason Segel pitched a perfect but completely different ending to the series, one cast member is still defending it, as we approach the year anniversary of TDSSCF (The Day That Show Shat In Our Collective Faces).

That one cast member is Neil Patrick Harris, who — ahead of his Oscar hosting stint — sat down with James Lipton to look back on his career. During that conversation, NPH ended up defending the HIMYM finale, via E!:

“I loved the ending, yeah. [Robin and Barney] didn’t belong together. She was meant to be with Ted…I loved the circles about the show and I love that whole season nine was trying to want them to be together and thinking that they’re perfect together.”

“I would have loved for them to end up together, but it’s not in Barney’s DNA to be together with her or the same person, so he leaves her and ends up being crazy and wanting to be even more insane and shag more people.

“[His daughter from a one-night stand] is the one woman he commits his life to. I really valued what that meant for Barney Stinson. I just don’t think there’s an adult female that will tame him, and yet a great conclusion to his journey that a woman—a female—ends up taming him and taking his heart.”

Hey! What about the part where the mother DIES? You have any feelings on that, Neil? Because she died, in case you don’t remember. She died from death, which killed her and made her dead. Ring any bells, bro? Maybe you don’t remember that part in your comedy sitcom where nobody laughed? Because that’s the part where we found out about the whole being dead from death thing, and it’s still not funny.
