Trump's Cabinet Picks Are A Mixture Of Sadness And Horror, But They Aren't Confirmed Yet

How’s that video making you feel? Terrible? Scared for the future of the country and the world? Like that trip to New Zealand might be permanent? Good. Call your Senator.

Trump has been making a mockery of his Cabinet selections. By picking people who will intentionally or through sheer incompetency destroy the agency they are tasked to lead, the President-elect is actively trying to dismantle the government. There isn’t a lot we can do to make him pick better people.

But we can make their confirmation process a lot harder. The Secretaries of his cabinet require Senate confirmation. So will the eventual replacement(s) (please dear God, let there be only one replacement) to the Supreme Court. In years past, it’s been used as a blatant political weapon. But the confirmations have saved us from having wildly unqualified people take very serious positions. There is ample evidence that several nominees (and at this point, the Secretaries) are either unsuited (Tillerson) or unqualified (Rick “D in Meats” Perry) for the position. So contact your Senators, and tell them that. Hell, contact Not Your Senators, and tell them that.

Honestly, it might not work. There’s a Republican majority in both Houses, and Republicans have proven to be unwilling to stand up to Trump. But not contacting them won’t offer any incentive to start growing a backbone. Make a few uncomfortable phone calls to let the Senate know that you’re involved, and that you don’t support the President-elect. It’s way easier than moving to Canada.
