White Walkers and Other Fiends We Might See in 'Game of Thrones'

We’ve got a long time to wait for new episodes of Game of Thrones and there’s different ways of handling the break. Some of us might be obsessively cataloging the location of Kit Harrington and what his hair looks like. However, for those of us less inclined towards potentially spoilish stalking* we can look forward to trickles of news about the shape of season 6. This especially fascinating to me as a book reader since this coming season will take us further away from the source material than ever before and this is kind of exciting but also pretty scary.

The first bit of news we have today is that Walder Frey will be returning at some point. This isn’t much of a surprise, one of the things I missed most last season from the books was seeing the Freys worm themselves into houses great and small across the Riverlands and the North and what begins to happen to them when they try to flex their newfound muscle. Hopefully we get to see a bit of that family and how they’re handling the loss of Tywin and the downfall of Cersei, who were their only hopes in terms of not being slaughtered by the people they betrayed. Well, them and the sheer number of Freys running around, but Westeros is a dangerous place these days.

The second piece of news we have is that we’re going to see and learn more about the White Walkers with some pretty dramatic scenes. The show has already gone into more depth with these creatures than the books, so I’m very curious to see how they handle them next season. Particularly with the battle for the North (and all of Westeros) heating up after the fight at Hardhome this past season. And who knows, maybe we’ll be getting a more personal look at them if some fan theories are correct.

Still, these are mostly rumors and innuendo, and next spring is far away. Not as far away as A Dream of Spring but still far enough out that we should take all of this with a very large grain of salt.

*And seriously, folks, everyone in the cast and on the production team has signed Non-Disclosure Agreements. Stop asking them what’s going on with Jon. They can’t tell you.
