Game of Thrones’ fourth and fifth seasons came under fire for the treatment of its female characters and employment of rape as a common plot device. But hey, with season six coming up, let’s forget about Cersei and Sansa’s sickening plot twists and focus on how cool they look!
Emilia Clarke, Lena Headey, Maisie Williams, Sophie Turner, Gwendoline Christie and Natalie Dormer are all supposed to have major moments next season. According to HBO programming president Michael Lombardo, “They power this season. It’s organic to the storytelling, yet a radical shift. It’s the women that are the hope that we’re watching as the chess pieces move this season, and it’s very exciting.”
This seems a cheap play to soothe female fans of the series. But it is thrilling to see the women of the show get spotlighted. Well, the white women of the show. Even in EW’s full photo gallery there’s not a single shot of Nathalie Emmanuel (Missandei), Indira Varma (Ellaria Sand) Keisha Castle-Hughes, Rosabell Laurenti Sellers or Jessica Henwick (the Sand Snakes).
Better luck next season?
Kristy Puchko loves this show, and is conflicted about that.
