Stephen Dillane Has Nothing Nice to Say About 'Game of Thrones'

A lot of actors are heartbroken when their characters are killed off of a hugely popular series, because it means no more paychecks, no more weekly visibility, and it often means leaving behind other actors who may have felt like family to them. Several The Walking Dead actors, for instance, have lobbied producers to find a way to allow their characters to continue on, though it is rarely successful (except in the case of Melissa McBride).

However, Stephen Dillane— who played Stannis Baratheon on Game of Thrones for five seasons — will not miss his time on Game of Thrones. He was not a fan either of his experience or of Game of Thrones itself, as he told the French magazine Liberation.

Here’s his poorly translated comments on his experience:

“I do not regret having done Game of Thrones, but I have nothing to say. I understood neither the series nor its success when I was attending. The experience was very strange, it passed under my nose. For a role like it to me, I must get interested could, which was not really the case. I was a bit overwhelmed. “He confirmed, however, that his character will not return, including in ectoplasmic form. Shooting in costumes in the gas plant to the four corners of the planet, we know nothing except that it was “difficult because it is a big machine.” Why, then, it be undertaken? Long silence, increasingly exasperated. “Among other things, for the money.”

Divorced from the context of the rest of the series, Stephen Dillane’s character mostly just scowled and admonished other people while working in frigid conditions. Not exactly a acting dream job. On the other hand, a lot of Game of Thrones fans are going to miss the most underappreciated character on the series more than Dillane will.
