While most Game of Thrones fans who are also fans of the A Song of Ice and Fire series have resigned themselves to the seemingly inevitable fact of the show outpacing the books and “spoiling” the ending, apparently George R.R. Martin has finally decided to fight back. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly he talks about clearing his schedule to really get down to work on Winds of Winter and his hopes that the book can be finished in 2016.
He does admit, “Maybe I’m being overly optimistic about how quickly I can finish. But I canceled two convention appearances, I’m turning down a lot more interviews - anything I can do to clear my decks and get this done.” We’ll see how it goes, but at the very least if he’s not showing up to conventions and cutting back on interviews, he won’t have to listen to people berate him for not having the book ready yet.
He also tries to bring the book readers hope that there are still surprises that the show can’t ruin for them, by teasing a new twist on an existing character. Martin specifically states “But this is something that seems very organic and natural, and I could see how it would happen. But it’s nothing I’ve ever thought of before. And it’s nothing they can do in the show, because the show has already - on this particular character - made a couple decisions that will preclude it, where in my case I have not made those decisions.” This makes me just a little bit nervous because late in the game shifts aren’t always a great idea, but I’m still excited to see what he comes up with and to read Winds of Winter whenever it’s released.
Oh, he also has a new show called Captain Cosmos in development with HBO, but don’t worry about that, it’s being written by Michael Cassutt of Z Nation.
