Maxxxine is Ti West and Mia Goth’s follow-up to 2022’s X and Pearl. I hoped this would be the one where Mia Goth gets some eyebrows, but she opted for the Farah Fawcett feathered wig instead.

Maxxxine tells the story of Goth’s Maxine Minx as she chases stardom in Hollywood during the same time that The Night Stalker (Richard Ramirez, not Kolchak) left a bloody wake across town.

Maxxxine also stars Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito, and Kevin Bacon. It opens in theaters on July 5th.

Did you watch Survival Of The Thickest? I didn’t know much about Michelle Buteau until that show, and now I find myself craving her genial mix of self-love and self-deprecation. Luckily, SotF has been renewed for a second season and she’s in the upcoming movie, Babes with Ilana Glazer (Broad City).

Directed by Pamela Adlon (Better Things), co-written by Ilana Glazer and Josh Rabinowitz, Babes opens in theaters on May 17th.

With Janet Planet, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Annie Baker has written and directed a film that seems like something we might get through without bawling hysterically but probably won’t. The film stars Julianne Nicholson (August: Osage County), Will Patton, Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda, The Secret Life Of Bees), Elias Koteas, and Zoe Ziegler as 11-year-old Lacey who “spends the summer of 1991 at home, enthralled by her own imagination and the attention of her mother, Janet.”

Janet Planet opens in theaters on July 28th.

I hate everything about this week’s laginappe. I super-especially hate that Mary-Louise Parker is in it. I extra-specially hate everything else about it though. You better not try and raise subscription prices again after this, Netflix.
